Balimisa Consultants

Twenty-five year old Hajarah Nantume is the founder of Balimisa Consultants, a firm that offers agroecology extension services to farmers and communities. As a youth leader, she brings the views of other young agripreneurs into the development of national agroecology policies in her country, Uganda.

Hajarah got involved with YALTA when she was looking for a job, and the youth caravan was a turning point for her. ‘I came up with the idea for my current company after visiting agroecology farms and learning from other young entrepreneurs’. Activities like these, and the right mentorship can help youth start looking up to role models that can show the potential of getting engaged in agroecology.

‘I still dreamt small, but being part of YALTA helped me change the goal posts’, says Hajarah. Through her firm, she wants to advise more farmers and scale agroecology in her region. She also wants to inspire youth to become agripreneurs by setting up an association for youth in agroecology..

The movement of youth in agroecology is growing fast. ‘What started off as a team of 10 entrepreneurs, has grown to a WhatsApp group of 250 youth in Uganda alone’. This group helps her market her services, and collect input for the policy development talks that she participates in as the first, and only, youth representative.

‘Youth are an asset to the nation, but if they are not guided they become a problem. Through platforms like YALTA, youth get empowered to share their knowledge and experience with others and can solve problems in their communities.’
