Overview: Awareness Campaigns to Engage and promote agroecological businesses among youth

Within YALTA, we started with an awareness-raising social media campaign that aimed to show youth across East Africa that there are opportunities in agroecology, and that they can build successful businesses. The team developed one video for Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda each. In it, a young local presenter, together with national, regional and global public figures, took to the streets to find out what people thought about farming and agroecology. Each video aimed to be entertaining and to reflect the “vox populi” on the topic. The presenters Arthur Nkusi (Rwanda), Caleb Karuga (Kenya), Robert Baramanga (Uganda) and Betelhem Lakew (Ethiopia) were selected based on their online reach and their camera presence.

Also, in the second half of 2020, 24 young agroecology entrepreneurs were trained to become our social media ambassadors. In a one-day workshop, led by the YALTA team and communication agency Makmende, these young participants learnt how to create, publish, and promote vlogs on social media platforms. In the end, these young agripreneurs were asked to share regular updates on their own social media channels. Here are the Kenyan  Social media ambassadors at work. The participants also shared material with one another through WhatsApp for inspiration and some healthy competition. In the end, the teams with the best footage had their material incorporated into short videos.

The core team simultaneously worked on country-specific campaigns to raise awareness on agroecology among youth, tailored to the realities, calls to action and content relevant to each country. The content of each campaign and also the call to action is different in each country, depending on the requirements and context. Making Agriculture sexy again  is one of the inspiring content developed in Rwanda. Youth were trained and encouraged to use digital platforms to market their agroecological products.
