Beekeeping is transforming food systems, as Dunros Kariuki, of Gatanga, Muranga County in Kenya can attest to. He now makes a living from selling honey, but more than that, he is proud of the impact he is having on his family lands. As a beekeeper, he is also protecting biodiversity, and creating awareness around organic farming among family members and neigbours.

As part of the YALTA agroecology awareness campaign, Dunros became a social media ambassador, posting mostly on Facebook. He developed his content-creation skills, and his posts now show his agroecological products, inspiring other young people to choose agroecology as a career path.

In his own words, “Trainings from seasoned digital strategists including Janet Machuka and Caleb Karuga provided me with the knowledge I needed to help create awareness and effectively engage on social media.I was able to engage in raising awareness about YALTA and its initiatives among Kenyan youth. I was able to meet and engage like-minded people from all over East Africa in agroecological discussions. The exposure it brought had a significant impact on my business. As a beekeeper, it certainly helped get clients for honey because they relied on my trust as a YALTA ambassador to give them quality honey, which I always did.”
